Map of online communities


xkcd + numbers on online communities. Need I say more? Along the same lines as the Web 2.0 Points of Control, xkcd maps online communities with fictitious regions sized by the amount of daily social activity. Beware of the Bay of Flame in the Blogosphere and the Northern Wasteland of Unread Updates in Facebook. Personally, I like to hop between the Twitter and YouTube islands.
It's most interesting when you compare it to the 2007 map where MySpace, Yahoo, and Windows Live ruled the land. I guess things are a little different nowadays.

Icons of the web scaled by popularity


Interessante e divertido: Nmap visualizes site popularity as scaled icons. Favicons, that is. They're that little icon that shows in your address bar or when you bookmark a site in your browser. If you're reading this on FlowingData, you should see a little red icon next to the URL. The larger the icon, the more popular the site is, based on Alexa traffic data. In whole, the image is a giant 37,440 by 37,440 pixels image. Google is 11,936 x 11,936 pixels. Facebook is 6,736 × 6,736 pixels. Yahoo is 6,544 × 6,544 pixels. (via FlowingData).

7 Basic Rules for Making Charts and Graphs

Basic rules for making graphs and charts
Charts and graphs have found their way into news, presentations, and comics, with users from art to design to statistics. The design principles for these data graphics will vary depending on what you're using it for. Making something for a presentation? You'll want to keep it extremely simple and avoid using a lot of text. Designing a graphic for a newspaper? You'll have to deal with size constraints and try to explain the important parts of your graphic.
However, whatever you're making your charts and graphs for, whether it be for a report, an infographic online, or a piece of data art, there are a few basic rules that you should follow.
There's wiggle room with all of them, and you should think of what follows as more of a framework than a hard set of rules, but this is a good place to start for those just getting into data graphics.

Check the data

This should be obvious. Data forms the foundation of charts and graphs. If your data is weak, your graph is weak, so make sure it makes sense. Start with some simple graphs to see if there are any outliers or weird spikes. Verify anything that doesn't make sense. You might be surprised how many data entry typos you find in the spreadsheets people send you.

Explain encodings

Maybe you use a color scale to indicate magnitude or the size of a square to represent values. Maybe it's a combination of both. Explain what these encodings are supposed to indicate, and don't assume the reader knows what everything means. Most likely he doesn't.
You can provide explanations in a variety of ways, but the most common are providing a legend, directly labeling shapes, or describing your graphic in a lead-in paragraph.
Without your pointers, it's a guessing game for the reader.

Label axes

Oh look, what fine gridlines you have there. Without labels or any explanation, they're just decoration. Label your axes so that readers know what scale points are plotted on. Is it logarithmic, incremental, exponential, or per 100 flushing toilets? Without axis labels, I always assume it's that last one. Also, in most cases, you'll want your value axis to start at zero.

Include units

Include some units while you're at it. If you just leave it with naked numbers, it could mean anything from a percentage, to a volume, to the number of chickens that crossed the road. Again, you want to eliminate the need for any guesswork from the reader.

Keep your geometry in check

If your geometry is wrong, this will be the first thing people call you on, especially if you use bubble size to indicate a numeric value, so you better get it right. You'll also probably have the pleasure of seeing your work highlighted negatively on some nerdy blog.
Here's how it works. Size circles and other two-dimensional shapes by area, unless it's a bar graph or something like that. When you size circles by diameter, you end up with circles that are way out of proportion, and that's a bad thing.

Include your sources

This should go without saying. Always include where the data is from. You can put it directly in a graphic, or if it's part of an article, the source can be specified in the copy. This does a couple of things. First, it makes your graphic more reputable, and second, those who are interested can dig deeper or fact check.

Consider your audience

Finally, like I said already, take into account who and what your graphs and charts are for, and design accordingly. You might design a graphic to be super-detailed for a poster that people can stare at for hours. But if it's for a presentation, you should keep the words to a minimum.
You should probably also avoid Comic Sans, but that's your call.
In the end, all of these rules can be broken for specific cases, and you'll learn where you can bend with practice. By no means are these rules absolute.
To put it simply: tell your story clearly and communicate the data accurately. Do that, and you'll be alright.

O impacto da base de dados no jornalismo

In regards to the UK's recent boom in open data, Simon Rogers of the Guardian, ponders data's role in journalism, and the opportunities this new found information could bring:

The impact on journalism is expected to be great. The Chicago-based web developer and founder of the neighbourhood news site EveryBlock, Adrian Holovaty, says it's going to be challenging but exciting for journalists. "As more governments open their data, journalists lose privileged status as gatekeepers of information – but the need for their work as curators and explainers increases. The more data that's available in the world, the more essential it is for somebody to make sense of it."
This need not only creates a fresh brand of news, but also a new type of journalist:
I once prided myself on my lack of maths knowledge. Now I find myself editing a datajournalism site, the Guardian's datablog: a site where we use Google Spreadsheets to post key datasets. We make the data properly accessible, then encourage our users to take the numbers, produce graphics and applications and help us look for stories.
Priding yourself on a lack of know-how on how to deal with data is a little weird, but okay.
In any case, people always ask me how to get into information design, infographics, visualization etc. Journalism is one of those choices, and there's a lot of opportunity there if you've got the skills.

Quanto vale um cientista de dados?


No início deste ano, o professor e CEO de Economia do Google Hal Varian disse que a estatística estará em alta nos próximos dez anos: "People think I’m joking, but who would’ve guessed that computer engineers would’ve been the sexy job of the 1990s?".

Entretanto, ao ler a entrevista que Hal concedera a The MacKinsey Quartely conclui-se que o professor chama de "estatístico" o profissional com capacidade para extrair informações de uma grande base de dados e apresentá-las de modo atraente ao usuário não especializado.

"We’re in the middle of a period that I refer to as a period of “combinatorial innovation.” So if you look historically, you’ll find periods in history where there would be the availability of a different component parts that innovators could combine or recombine to create new inventions. In the 1800s, it was interchangeable parts. In 1920, it was electronics. In the 1970s, it was integrated circuits.

The ability to take data—to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it—that’s going to be a hugely important skill in the next decades, not only at the professional level but even at the educational level for elementary school kids, for high school kids, for college kids. Because now we really do have essentially free and ubiquitous data. So the complimentary scarce factor is the ability to understand that data and extract value from it.

I think statisticians are part of it, but it’s just a part. You also want to be able to visualize the data, communicate the data, and utilize it effectively. But I do think those skills—of being able to access, understand, and communicate the insights you get from data analysis—are going to be extremely important. Managers need to be able to access and understand the data themselves."

As habilidades destacadas pelo CEO de Economia do Google refletem bastante a proposta apresentada por Ben Fry em sua tese de doutorado intitulada Computational information design, defendida no Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), em abril de 2004:

Infovis and Human- Computer Interaction (HCI) - interaction

O profissional com esse perfil é o que o FlowingData chama de cientista de dados:

meu comentário: a noção de cientista de dados mostra que cada vez mais o trabalho coletivo e a mistura de habilidades são indispensáveis para elaborar projetos para a cultura de rede. Isso significa que a internet reconfigurou a noção de formação técnica e teórica ao reunir conhecimentos de diversas áreas em apenas um profissional. Talvez, a recombinação de práticas possa guiar a pauta de revisão da formação jornalística.
